Description

SERVICE-LEARNING, a learning-teaching strategy engaging students in service as they learn, is growing in popularity in all levels of education (grade school to college) and in communities across the United States (National Service-Learning Clearinghouse [NSLC], 2011). A Campus Compact survey of 1,144 American colleges and universities (2010) found that more than 382 million hours of service were contributed to local communities through service-learning (SL) course work. Moreover, a reported 35 percent of students engaged in service, with an average of 64 SL courses offered in each of the participating member campuses. It is apparent that SL is widely used in academic settings and is a valued strategy to enhance student learning. What is less apparent is how it affects students and those being served. With some of the first articles addressing SL published in the 1990s, it is now time to evaluate this strategy and investigate its use in academia. This systematic review describes the current evidence in the nursing education literature as it applies to the practice of service-learning. Recommendations for future research and nursing education are presented. What Is Service-Learning? SL has been defined as an equal and symbiotic relationship between academic study and service, each enhancing the other in teaching students civic responsibilities and producing stronger communities (NSLC, 2011). These SL processes take place within the context of the service setting rather than in the unattached setting of the classroom or isolation of textbook reading. Engaging in service as a civic responsibility is expected to help students gain additional insight into course content as well as provide practical assistance to the served community.
